Heavy flooding of the River Nile has Tuesday cut off the Pakwach Bridge making it difficult to motorists to cross to either side.

By publication time over 2000 travelers and tourists were stranded on each side of the bridge.

The Gulu-Arua road bridge at Pakwach is the only bridge in Uganda that crosses the Albert Nile.

River Nile is said to have burst it’s banks due to the heavy downpour on Tuesday morning.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has temporarily closed the bridge, due to what they described as “flush floods which overtopped the road- carriage-way and deposited substantial amount of water weeds, water hyacinth and other debris on the road carriage way”.

The Authority in their Tuesday evening statement noted that the bridge has not been affected by the flooding.

“Our maintenance team from Gulu and Arua are mobilsing equipment to clear the road for traffic use immediately,” reads the statement in part.

In the mean time, motorists to and from West Nile have been advised to use;

Gulu-Adjumani-Laropi ferry, Gulu-Adjumani- Obongi ferry or the Masindi- Wanseko ferry.
