The move to censure security minister Gen Elly Tumwine has flopped. Members of Parliament have failed to collect adequate signatures to drive the motion.
The motion was championed by Kasambya County MP Mbwatekamwa Gaffa a week ago. He drafted the censure document onto which MPs were supposed to append signatures. During a press conference on Wednesday, Gaffa said they had only gathered 39 signatures, a number that is not adequate to sustain the motion.
MPs wanted Tumwine censured for blocking the work of Parliament when Members of Parliament were probing illegal detention centres in the country.
MPs said Tumwine had frustrated investigations into the torture of Ugandans and also blocking Members of Parliament in the Human Rights Committee from doing their work.
“I was the first person to sign as the mover of the censure motion but as we talk, remaining with only two days, only 39 MPs have signed. I know the question would be why it is only 39 MPs who have signed when we have a Parliamentary resolution and by the time it was passed, more than 200 MPs in the House,” he said.
