In celebration of Uganda’s 58th Independence anniversary, Airtel Uganda this morning honored and awarded the Minister for Health Hon. Jane Ruth Aceng as well as Uganda’s frontline medical workers for their outstanding contribution towards the fight against COVID-19.

Each year, Airtel Uganda commemorates Independence Day through various activities showcasing patriotism and the significance of Independence in Uganda. During the celebrations, the company recognizes Ugandans that have exhibited patriotism and excellence in different fields.

“As we celebrate Independence this year, we are honored to award Dr. Ruth Aceng and all the frontline health workers across the country who have championed the fight against Covid-19 in Uganda. I implore all Ugandans to continue adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures as we work together to eradicate this virus,” noted Mr VG. Somasekhar, the Airtel Uganda Managing Director.

According to Hon. Aceng, Uganda has been rated as one of the 10 best performing countries in suppressing the transmission of COVID-19 and the best in Africa.

“This would not have been possible without the efforts of the frontline medical teams who have invested sleepless nights, hard work and commitment. I am therefore humbled and honored for my recognition in the fight against COVID-19. These times have been difficult, but we are grateful for the private sector and Ugandans for coming together,” she noted.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Airtel Uganda has partnered with the Ministry of Health to contribute to the different interventions that have been put by the Government of Uganda. In April this year, the telco donated shs1.2 billion to the Ministry of Health towards the Coronavirus response. Staff of Airtel Uganda also donated Shs73 million towards the procurement of Personal Protective Equipment.
