Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been voted the Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament, The Tower Post reports.
Among who won the race by landslide victory polled 415 votes beating two of her rivals including Forum for Democratic Change – FDC’s Yusuf Nsibambi and Independent Kampala Central legislator Mohammed Nsereko.
Nsereko who was contesting for the same position for the second time garnered a meagre 24 votes which put him in third place, just behind Yusuf Nsereko who also managed to raise only 35 votes.
Among will now deputise Omoro County MP Jacob Oulanyah who earlier beat his former boss to win the speakership race.
The duo was yesterday endorsed by the ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM as their candidates for the race.
Oulanya was preferred against the party’s second national Vice Chairperson Rebecca Kadaga, a decision that was made by the NRM Central Executive Committee
Among however defeated two other contestants in an election cast by the NRM Caucus.
She becomes the second woman to hold the office since 1962 when Uganda got her independence from the British.
