Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah has on Sunday morning passed away in Seattle, USA.
The speaker’s death was revealed by President Yoweri Museveni through his Twitter handle.
“Countrymen and Countrywomen. It is with a lot of sadness that I announce the death of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament. I got information of this sad news at 10.30am, East African time from People that have been with him and the doctor that was caring for him in the intensive care unit,” Museveni announced on Twitter.
The President described Oulanyah as a “good Cadre”, adding that he delayed the announcement of the Speaker’s death so that his children would be informed first.
Speaker Oulanyah’s death comes a few days after the Deputy Speaker Anita Among, the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, the Minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng and Democratic Party (DP) president Nobert Mao visited him in Seattle where he was hospitalized.
Oulanyah was first admitted at Mulago Hospital in January this year, before doctors referred him abroad for specialized treatment.
The Omoro County MP (Omoro District) was elected Speaker of Parliament on May 24, 2021, after defeating the former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. Oulanyah previously served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from May 2011 to May 2021.
