National Unity Platform – NUP Secretary General Lewis David Rubongoya has been arrested, The Tower Post has learnt.
Rubongoya, according to a statement posted on NUP Social Media channels was arrested together with his driver a one Gordon Agaba on Wednesday afternoon.
“Secretary General David Rubongoya and his driver Agaba Gordon have been arrested and detained at Nateete Police Station on allegations of threatening violence in the recently concluded Omoro by election,” NUP posted.
Rubongoya was part of the team that travelled to Omoro to solicit votes for Simon Toolit Akecha the NUP flag bearer in the Omoro County by-elections.
The Omoro County seat that fell vacant after the demise of former speaker Jacob Oulanyah L’Okori was taken by his son Andrew Ojok amid violence and protests from opposition politicians.
Rubongoya said on Wednesday that he was arrested and detained in Wandegeya in the morning but was later released, only to be arrested later in the afternoon.
“Today morning while driving via wandegeya with my driver Agaba Gordon, a traffic officer stopped us and claimed that my car is wanted on allegations of having committed a crime during the recently concluded by-election in Omoro,” he posted on his social media.
“We were briefly arrested at Wandegeya Police station and later I was released and proceeded to attend Hon Ssegirinya and Sewanyana’s court. However, Gordon was later driven to Natete Police Station. After court I passed by Natete Police Station to follow up and I’ve also been re-arrested,” he added.
Police is yet to make a comment about the arrests.
