“I am very happy. When I heard them call my name, I first got sick and felt chills in my body. To be honest, I did not expect to win,” narrates, Nabukenya Madina, a real estate agent based in Nansana, Wakiso District.
She was one of the two winners of the MTN motorcycles that were given away at the MTN Mobile Money mega concert on 20th August 2017 at Wankulukuku stadium. She emerged a winner from a raffle conducted where they were over 20,000 phone numbers to pick from.
“This boda-boda will now increase my sources of income. My plan is to have this work for my boda-boda business. This will increase my income levels,” she adds.
The concert dubbed Ekivvulu kya MTN Mobile Money, allowed customers to be treated to a free music concert by Uganda’s top musicians.
About 30,000 MTN customers turned up at the Wankulukuku stadium to watch musicians like Bobi Wine, Jose Chameleone, Cindy, Radio and Weasel, Lady Jazmine, Juliana and Irene Ntale among others.
“I am going to save on my transport costs every morning and evening. I have been spending Shs 6500 everyday when I use a taxi and Ugx.10,000 everyday when I take boda-boda. Now all that will be gone because all I need is a liter of fuel for two day,” says Kakooza Kudrah, a salesman from Wakiso who won the second motor-cycle.
He also says that he has been transacting using MTN Mobile Money for a while and that for him “it is more of a bank.”
MTN Mobile Money was started in 2009 and has since then fostered financial inclusion in the country with over 8 million subscribers.
Customers by dialing *165# are able to send and receive money, pay bills, apply for a MoKash micro-loan, save and earn interest and also link to their bank account.
The mega concert held on sunday was a conclusion of the first MTN Mobile Money Month.
