FDC’s Kantinti Thrown Out of Parliament; Court Orders Fresh Election

The Court of Appeal has Wednesday nullified the election of Kyadondo East MP (in Wakiso district) Apollo Kantinti and ordered that a fresh poll be held.

Last year, High Court judge Isabirye Kaweesa nullified FDC’s Kantinti’s election citing failure to comply with electoral laws. But Kantinti ran to the Court of Appeal.

Justices Richard Buteera, Cheborion Balishaki and Paul Mugamba of the Court of Appeal unanimously upheld Kaweesa’s ruling.

They explained that a careful re-evaluation of the evidence on record had indicated that that there was ambiguity on the winner of the election.

The Justices added that with results from nine polling stations having not been included in the final tally, over 5,000 voters had been defranchised.

He will now face NRM’s William Sitenda Sebalu, a man he beat with a margin of only 326 votes.

Kantinti has also been ordered to pay court costs to Sebalu.
