Janet Museveni Didn’t Order Stella Nyanzi Arrest: Says Kayihura

Police chief Gen. Kale Kayihura has finally revealed the person who gave the order for the arrest of Makerere University researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi on Friday last week.

The IGP while speaking to journalists at Uganda Communication Commission’s headquarters revealed that the orders to arrest Dr Nyanzi came from him and not the First Lady Janet Museveni, as many people thought.

“She has abused internet on a several occasions. We must protect the internet. We could not just sit and let this continue,” said Kayihura.

“We don’t need to be ordered by the First Lady. She publicly forgave her. But even if she forgave her, we as police have to perform our duty,” he added.

The IGP further noted that the CID has since last year, had cases of computer misuse against Dr. Nyanzi.

Stella Nyanzi was on Monday (April 10th, 2017) charged with Cyber Harassment and Computer Misuse, and remanded to Luzira Prison until April 25th.
