Arrested Makerere Students Granted Bail

Buganda Road court Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu has granted bail to four Makerere University students who were charged with inciting violence.

The four who include; Edmond Kahiigi, Stephen Ariho, Roy Rugumayo and Hannington Mugarura were arrested on Wednesday May 10th while protesting against the detention of Makerere Research fellow, Dr. Stella Nyanzi whose bail hearing (at the time) had been dragging for close two months.

The quartet was denied bail twice, an act that compelled their lawyers led by Isaac Ssemakadde to file for judicial misconduct against the presiding magistrate.

While appearing in court on Wednesday, Ssemakadde prayed that the accused be released on a non-cash bail since they are students and unemployed.

Kamasanyu released the four students on a Shs10 million non-cash bail and each of them was bonded on Shs10 million.

Court has also set May 30th as the date when the hearing of the matter will commence.
