Martyrs Day: Pilgrim Collapses Dead in Namugongo

A pilgrim has Monday morning collapsed and died at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo, days before the celebration.

This was revealed by Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire in a statement posted on the Force’s website.

“The territorial Police at Kira Division is currently investigating the death of a pilgrim identified as Arinitwe Jackline, 49 a peasant from Katokori Village, Kyanarwa Parish, Katanda sub-county in Rubirizi District,” Owoyesigire said.

The incident, according to Police happened at about 11:30 am in Namugongo Parish, Kira Municipality Wakiso District.

The deceased was among the 90 pilgrims who were trekking from west Ankole diocese for the martyrs’ day celebrations slated for Friday 3rd June.

“Her body has been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for Postmortem to help establish the exact cause of death.

“The police would like to convey their condolences to the family of the deceased person and also advise all pilgrims to always rehydrate in a way of taking enough water and also have enough rest during the pilgrimage.”
