Premier League, La Liga and Serie A preview, 24-28 February 2023

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to extended action from the Premier League, La Liga  and Serie A, with matches scheduled to be played from Friday 24 to Tuesday 28 February 2023.

The pick of Premier League matches this weekend is the meeting of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in a London derby on the afternoon of Sunday 26 February. While Spurs are fighting to finish in the top four, the Blues are looking to drag themselves up into a similar position after struggling to find consistency through the course of the season.

“It was always a case of managing in challenging circumstances, but I am not complaining. It will test my attributes and qualities, and that is something to be happy about,” said Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

“Yeah of course [any coach would love to be in his position]. It is a fantastic football club and really exciting. You should never really compare yourself to somebody else, as you don’t know their circumstances and context.”

The round will be a shortened one, with Newcastle United v Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United v Brentford postponed due to the Magpies and Red Devils meeting in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Friday sees the Premier League action get underway with Fulham hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers, before a busy Saturday is headlined by Arsenal heading to Leicester City and looking to keep themselves on track for the title.

“Now is a time to love the players more than the day before and the month before, because they fully deserve it. We will be next to them and prepare for Saturday,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

Saturday also features champions Manchester City away to strugglers Bournemouth, while Crystal Palace will hope to claim the scalp of Liverpool when the teams meet in a night game at Selhurst Park.

“If we want a positive result we have to raise the quality of the game,” said Eagles manager Patrick Vieira. “It’s about how we play for 95 minutes as a team to compete and we have to do that to take something from it. [A strong mentality] should be a given for us as a football club and as a team. We have to concentrate, we have to be competitive, we have to have a really good game programme to challenge.”

SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the headline fixture is the capital city derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos are looking to fight their way back into the title race with Barcelona, while the Rojiblancos want to secure a top-four finish and ensure that they play UEFA Champions League football next season.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti says his team will fight right to the end in La Liga, and all competitions they are involved in: “We have the same pace as last year, but Barca is doing much better. If there are many or few [points] I don’t know, but we are very confident in fighting until the end.”

The Italian added: “We don’t throw away any competition because we are very close. This club doesn’t throw away competitions and we don’t want to throw away a single game.”

Barcelona, meanwhile, face a trip to Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos to face Almeria. Brazilian winger Raphinha has been in great form for the Blaugrana of late, earning special praise from manager Xavi Hernandez.

“As for Raphinha, he was intense, he attacked spaces, and gave us key things in attack and he is doing decisive things,” said the Catalan tactician. “Now it seems to me that he stands out more as he is an extraordinary player.”

The round also features Valencia playing host to Real Sociedad. Los Che recently parted ways with manager Gennaro Gattuso and new boss Salvador Gonzalez ‘Voro’ has urged the team to keep fighting against the prospect of relegation.

“There is still a lot of time left, but we need results to react now,” said ‘Voro’. “There is no bad atmosphere in the dressing room. There is a responsibility and a concern for this club, and that makes it a pressure situation for us to win.”

The top clash from Serie A in this round is the meeting of AC Milan and Atalanta at the San Siro on the evening of Sunday 26 February. Both teams are fighting to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, making this clash a six-pointer in that regard.

La Dea will look to Ivorian winger Jeremie Boga to continue with his improving form: “Now I am playing a little bit more and doing it well. I’ve always believed in myself and Atalanta. I’ve worked hard to get back in shape, which has boosted my self-confidence. My head was always the same, I was calm, I trusted God and myself and I felt I’d have my chance sooner or later.”

The round opens with leaders Napoli heading to Stadio Carlo Castellani to face hosts Empoli, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen hoping the Partenopei keep up their excellent form.

“All the victories are important, we need to keep the momentum and try to win all games,” said the Super Eagles stars. “It is not going to be easy of course, Serie A is a very competitive league and we have to be on top of our game. We go back, we prepare for the next game, that is the most important thing.”

The weekend also features Internazionale visiting Bologna, and Lazio hosting Sampdoria on Monday night, while Tuesday 28 February sees the month close out with the Turin derby – the ‘Derby della Mole’ – between Juventus and Torino at the Allianz Stadium.

Juve are delighted to have Federico Chiesa back from long-term injury, with the 25-year-old recently explaining how tough his recovery was: “After the surgery, I was on crutches for six weeks. It was as if I had never left the hospital because even with small things, I had to have someone’s help. When I gave up the crutches it was liberating, I couldn’t stand them any more.”

He continued, “I had two thoughts before returning to the field: will I be okay? I did everything I could do to get back to my level.”
