IGP Ochola Closes Nalufenya Detention Facility

New Inspector general of Police Martin Okoth Ochola has ordered for the closure of Nalufenya Police Dentention Facility located in Jinja.

Nalufenya is a gazzetted police station that has been used under former IGP Gen. Kale Kayigure’s time as a detention centre for high profile criminals who are waiting being charged in courts of law.

Many of the suspects detained at the facility including the Kaweesi Murder suspects, Kamwege Mayor Godfrey Byamukama among others have come out openly revealed that acts of human rights violation are carried out at the facility including torture, detention without trial among others.

According to the New Vision newspaper, the decision for the closure was reached during the Police Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting chaired by Ochola on Wednesday.

This website understands that committee members agreed that suspects can be detained in the other various Police stations in the country.

Some senior police officers are however said to have been against the closure, arguing that Nalufenya had good interrogation facilities and accommodation for suspects but Ochola and majority others maintained the decision giving Naggalama Police Station as an equally good facility for interrogation.

However when contacted, Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima denied having any knowledge about the closure.

Okoth Ochola and his deputy Brig. Sabiiti Muzei, who were recently appointed by President Museveni to head the Police, are said to be embarking on a mission to change the image of the force.
