President Museveni has okayed the postponement of the NRM primaries to at least August or September. The primaries were scheduled to start in April 2020, staring with special interest groups, then district and Parliamentary candidates in May/June.
“I have received your letter of the 23rd of March, 2020, regarding the NRM Primaries.
I totally agree with the idea. The country should minimize the time spent on electioneering. Therefore, August and September 2020 are reasonable,” Museveni said in a letter to the Speaker
“I will consult the CEC Members by telephone through the Secretary-General,” he added.
Relatedly, a section of EALA MPs recently said they were going to petition the President to postpone the 2021 general elections on account that the coronavirus pandemic has already strained the country financially. Elections will strain us more, therefore, postponing them would be a great move.
The Electoral Commission, however, said it was too early to state whether elections will be postponed or not.
