On the 10th of August 2020, SC Villa announced the official signing of 20 year old midfield youngster Goffin Godfrey Oyirwoth on a two year contract tying him at the club up to the 2022.
Goffin, as he is famously known, has been a promising addition to the squad. He has started all the five games we have played during the 2020/21 season.
The Communication Team at SC Villa caught up with the youngster to find out how he has found life at the club and this is how the interaction went down:
During the transfer window, when you heard that SC Villa was interested in your services, how did you feel?
“I felt happy as a player. I felt privelleged knowing that a club in Villa’s stature was looking out for me.”
Why did you choose SC Villa over a host of clubs that were interested in you?
“I love SC Villa: It is a big team and the best in Uganda. There is no talented player who does not want to play for the best team.”
Why did you choose the shirt number 27?
“Initially I wanted the number 7 but I learned that Benson wears it so I asked for any other ending with 7. That’s how I ended up with 27.”
How was your first training at SC Villa like?
“My first training at SC Villa was impressive since earlier in my career I had worked with most of the players.”
Still about training sessions with Villa, how challenging was it adapting to the new tactics introduced to you by the coaching staff at Villa?
“Since different teams have different tactics, at first I really struggled to grasp the tactics at Villa.
It was really challenging because I made many errors while executing the instructions given to me by the coaches but as time went on, I fell in line.”
Coming into this season, what were your targets and with 5 games played, are you in line with achieving them?
“When I signed for Villa, first I was focussed on working hard so as to break into starting XI which I have achieved in the first 5 games.
Secondly I want to be involved in more goals: I want to create more goals as well as score as many as possible.
I want to win silverware for SC Villa.”
Being a new signing at the club and at 20 years, how does it feel having started all the 5 games for the club?
“Starting all the 5 games is as a result of the hardwork in training. It is a great feeling but again I will not take it for granted but rather continue working hard in order to keep my position.”
Your best performance in a Villa shirt so far came on match day 2 versus Mbarara City, how did it feel having a hand in two goals that day?
“I felt very happy that I was able to help the team earn 3 points that day. Being involved in two goals helped me to build my confidence as a player.
I was also very impressed with the team work that day.”
What is your comment about the team’s current run of form i.e DWLWL?
“Our team is not performing poorly but we still have a lot to work on and improve as a team most especially our away form.
And for me personally I also have a lot to offer the team so that we make our performance better.”
We are in the know that you idolize SC Villa legend Steven Bengo and Croatian international Luka Modric, unlike them you have been deployed on the wing all the games. Does not this hinder in any way your dream of wanting to be like them?
“It’s not about the positions on the pitch but rather their footballing abilities. I love the way Bengo handled and used the ball not forgetting his deadballs capabilities.
Modric on the other hand is a refined player, his passing and shooting techniques are adorable.”
Currently, the league has gone for a break, how are you spending your time off?
“Now that the league has gone for a break, first I’ll rest and let my body recover. The resting period will not be that long though because I still have a lot to improve on for the coming games.
I will start off my personal training at the start of January so that I am in perfect shape for when team training resumes.”
Finally, what advice are you giving out to all Ugandans in relation to staying safe from the COVID-19 pandemic?
“I advise everyone to follow the guidelines that were issued by the Ministry of Health: Wear their masks, sanitise because COVID-19 is real and it kills.”
