KENYA: Date Set for Fresh Presidential Election

Kenya’s  Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the date for the fresh presidential election following the decision by the Supreme Court of Kenya to annul Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection.

Kenya’s Supreme Court on Friday annulled the results of August 8th presidential election that had given Jubilee Party candidate Kenyatta victory over rival Raila Odinga of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition and ordered fresh polls in 60 days.

During its 204th Plenary Meeting held on Monday (September 4th), the IEBC resolved that a fresh election will be held on 17th October, 2017.

“In the fresh election, the petitioners before the supreme court, the Hon Raila Odinga and his running mate Hon. Stephen Kalyonzo Musyoka and the third respondent, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate Hon. William Samoei Ruto, shall be the only candidates,” a statement from the commission’s chairman Wafula Chebukati reads in part.

Chebukati has also urged Supreme Court to release a detailed judgment in the just concluded petition “in order to allow the commission to identify areas that require improvement in the management of the fresh election”.
